Artist: Johnny Cash

Who Turned Me On to the Artist: My mother

Description: The Man- in-Black, always the coolest mother-fucker in the room

Why I Relate: I respect his don't give a shit attitude, I also respect that he grew up: as a person and an artist

Favorite Song: Folsom Prison Blues, Five Feet High and Risin', Ring of Fire

Favorite Lyric: pretty much all of his lyrics sucked and could have been written by any fairly intelligent sixth grader, that said, his delivery and conviction and just sheer presence made everything he sang sound cool

p.s. I am no Johhny-come-lately and have been a Cash fan for years

Artist: Tom Waits

Who Turned Me On to the Artist: Don’t remember

Description: Gravel voiced, skid-row, madman-genius poet

Why I Relate: mostly the madman-genius poet part

Favorite Song: I Don’t Want to Grow Up

Favorite Lyric:

Last night I dreamed that I was dreaming of you

And from a window across the lawn
I watched you undress
Wearing your sunset of purple tightly woven around your hair
That rose in strangled ebony curls
Moving in a yellow bedroom light
The air is wet with sound
The faraway yelping of a wounded dog
And the ground is drinking a slow faucet leak
Your house is so soft and fading as it soaks the black summer heat
A light goes on and the door opens
And a yellow cat runs out on the stream of hall light and into the yard

Artist: The Cure

Who Turned Me On to the Artist: Erica Merchant

Description: Teenaged-angst for the very grown-up listener

Why I Relate: Robert Smith appeals to the weird, nerdy, angry loner that secretly lurks inside of me (inside us all). The Cure is my favoritest band of all time.

Favorite Song: Just Like Heaven

Favorite Lyric: (I could go on forever!)

(Boys Don't Cry) Misjudged your limits/Pushed you too far/Took you for granted/Thought that you needed me more/Now I would do most anything/To get you back by my side/But I just keep on laughing/Hiding the tears in my eyes/'Cause boys don't cry

(Icing Sugar)Your delicious/Dreaming/Slack jawed/Green eyed/Rub my nose in/Icing sugar/Smooth as/When this cold and deadly/Blade/Kissed the fruit/So soft/And gently breathing/Under your skin

(Shiver and Shake)You're just a waste of time/You're just a babbling face/You're just three sick holes that run like sores/You're a fucking waste/You're like a slug on the gir/lOh you're useless and ugly/And useless and ugly/And I shiver and shake/When I think of how you make me hate

(why Can't I Be You?)You're so gorgeous/I'll do anything/I'll kiss you from your feet/To where your head begins/You're so perfect/Yes, you're so right as rain/You make me/Make me/Make me hungry again/Everything you do is irresistable/Everything you do is simply kissable/Why can't I be you?

Artist: Shawn Colvin

Who Turned Me On to the Artist: Austin City Limits on a slow TV night

Description: Folk-country

Why I Relate: Just plain good music/lyrics

Favorite Song: Polaroids

Favorite Lyric:
But I had a dream last night
Of lovers who walked the plank...
Coming to rest on this ship of fools
He just took polaroids
Of her smile in the light
Of the dawn of the menacing sky
And before they went overboard
She held up a card
And it said Valentine
